England won their last match to stay alive in the tournament. They had another nail biting close counter but this time they got help from some quality spin bowling and self destruction of the Windies to win by 18 runs.
Batting first England had a pretty good start and they raced off to 120 runs by 21 overs backed by some good batting by Prior and Trott. The middle order after this could not carry on and losing quick wickets put brakes on England attack as they lost Eoin Morgan and Bopara cheaply. Luke wright played well towards the end and this ensured that they get to a respectable total of 243 runs. They were all out though and could not bat the entire 50 overs. For the Windies, Russel took 4 wickets and Bishoo took 3.
Chasing an average total on a good track, windies batting looked in a tremendous hurry and big hitters came first as Sammy was promoted up the order. Gayle blasted 43 from 21 balls and Sammy scored 41 from 29 balls. Even after losing 3 wickets, Sammy showed no signs of slowing down and this resulted in wickets being fallen at regular intervals and for England to stay in the game. The West Indies trademark self destruction though started after Sammy got out after 17th over. The West Indies batsmen other than Sarwan showed no signs of playing the entire 50 overs. They looked like as if they feared batting the entire 50 overs and seemed interested in getting the runs as quickly as possible. Even the final effort by Russel went in vain as Swann took 2 wickets in his last over to draw curtains on the chase that Windies never looked like they were going to make. For England the first 3 wickets were taken by Tredwell who finished with 4 for 48. Swann took 3 wickets and Bopara helped by bowling tight line at the other end.
England 243 (Trott 47, Russell 4-49) beat
West Indies 225 (Russell 49, Tredwell 4-48) by 18 runs
